Modify Hot Keys

You may modify a hot key by selecting Options | Keyboard Shortcuts from the main menu to open the HotKey Setup window. Select a hot key to modify and click on the Modify button. A window similar to the one below will appear. The name of the hot key you are working with will be displayed in the window title. You can specify a nickname, an output format, a ZIP Code source and a ZIP Code output. You may also create a new output format by clicking on the Modify Formats button if none of the available formats fit your needs. You may also deactivate the hot key by using the Delete button.

ZIP Express Window > Options > Keyboard Shortcuts > Select Format > Modify Button

Nickname

The "Nickname" is a name you can assign to the hot key to remind you what the hot key does. This will allow you to more readily understand what action is assigned to each hot key.

Output Format

These are the formats that may be selected for output. If you do not see the format you desire, you can select the modify button to add new formats. If the output is directed to the clipboard, then any special function keys in the format that would normally apply to pasting information directly into a program will be ignored. These include such keys as Backtab, Left Arrow and Del Char. The return key and the tab key will both be passed onto the clipboard.

ZIP Code Source

When creating a Keyboard Shortcut, you can modify the way ZIP Express behaves. One of these characteristics is the method used to obtain the ZIP Code for look up or the "ZIP Code Source". The options available are as follows.

From Clipboard

This option instructs ZIP Express to read the clipboard and use the contents of the clipboard as the ZIP Code. ZIP Express expects only a ZIP Code and will not parse a ZIP Code out of a line of text.

Key It In

This option instructs ZIP Express to prompt the user for the ZIP Code. When the hot key is invoked, a small input box will appear where the ZIP Code is to be entered. As soon as the 5th digit of the ZIP Code is entered, the ZIP Code look up will start.

Copy Highlighted

This option instructs ZIP Express to copy the highlighted text to the clipboard and then read the clipboard and use the contents of the clipboard as the ZIP Code. ZIP Express expects only a ZIP Code and will not parse a ZIP Code out of a line of text.

Highlight and Copy

This option instructs ZIP Express to highlight the content of the field the cursor is in, copy the highlighted text to the clipboard and then read the clipboard and use the contents of the clipboard as the ZIP Code. ZIP Express expects only a ZIP Code and will not parse a ZIP Code out of a line of text.

Note: The Highlight and Copy option sends the following keys to highlight the content of the field the cursor is in: <End><Shift Down><Home><Shift Up>  This sequence may not work for all fields.

All ZIP Code Data

This option will save every ZIP code in the data base to a file that you select. The data will be saved in the Output Format selected. When using this option, the ZIP Code Output file will default to an Into File selection. This is the only Output Format available for this option.

Note: Use of this option requires purchasing a data export license. Without the license you will only be able to export a sample of ZIP Code records.

ZIP Code Output

When creating a Keyboard Shortcut, you can modify the way ZIP Express behaves. One of these characteristics is the method used to output the information resulting from the ZIP Code look up or the "ZIP Code Output". The options available are as follows.

Into Calling Program

This options tells ZIP Express to type the results of the ZIP Code look up directly into the program that had control when the hot key was invoked. The results will be typed at the location of the cursor. If by chance you invoke the hot key when the focus is on something that cannot accept text (such as a list box), the keystrokes will still be sent and you will likely hear a number of beeps as if you had just typed the information directly from the keyboard.

Please note that it is possible to send special keystrokes such as TAB and BACKTAB back to the calling program. This allows for each segment of the ZIP Code results typed into different fields of an application. Look at Pasting Formats for more information on special keystrokes.

Into Clipboard

This option instructs ZIP Express to save the results of the ZIP Code look up directly to the Windows clipboard.

Display Only

This option Instructs ZIP Express to take the results of the ZIP Code look up, open ZIP Express and display the relevant data in the search results window.

Into File

This option is only available if you have selected All ZIP Code Data as your ZIP Code Source. Insert the file name and path in the edit box. The data in the Output Format you chose will be saved to this text file.

Save Output in Uppercase Text

Check this box if you want to have the data saved to the file in uppercase (all capitals) text.
